Supported Playgroups

Kids 4 Life is funded by Families NSW and is a response to the needs of local families with young children aged 0-8 years in the Lismore and Goonellabah areas. Support and education is provided for families through a range of programmes including supported playgroups and parenting groups as follows:
Family Tree Playgroup A playgroup now running out of an Aged Care Facility recreational room. The residents become actively engaged through the activities that the children and parents are involved in. Examples of activities are songs, games and crafts. This is a good example of our Y It Takes a Village at work - where different generations in the community are brought closer together. Family Tree meets every Thursday from 10:15am to noon at Caroona Nursing Home.
Polkadot Playgroup A playgroup that is held every Tuesday at the YWCA NSW Goonellabah at 10:00am where morning tea is provided. This is a generalist group where mothers come to share stories, remedies and the highs and lows of life and parenthood as well as being able to access professionals and key people in personal health and wellbeing. This is a holistic approach where we are not only addressing issues about children but also addressing issues around self care and revitalizing their own needs. Polkadots also addresses issues around revitalising parents own needs and self care. A craft program for the parents teaches simple weaving, sewing and knitting.

Beanies Playgroup An Indigenous playgroup which meets every Wednesday at 10.00am at our Goonellabah Centre where morning tea is also provided. Beanies is run exactly the same way as Polkadots but is aware of cultural differences. Social workers from different Indigenous community providers attend and help with building a stronger sense of community within the Goonellabah area. Beanies also addresses issues around revitalising parents own needs and self care. A craft program for the parents teaches simple weaving, sewing and knitting.
