
Aboriginal Healing & Wellbeing YWCA NSW will build healthy lifestyle knowledge, practice and capacity within Aboriginal communities in 3 areas of NSW through the delivery of HEALING – a program designed to support Aboriginal women in making healthier choices around exercise and nutrition for themselves and their families.
The program was designed and developed by Laurel Rogers, an Aboriginal woman working for North Coast Area Health service and has been running in the north of the state since 2003.
It will be delivered by a network of trained and supported Aboriginal staff within their own communities in 3 regions:
Course FormatHEALING is a 10 week course (2-3 hours per week) which incorporates:-
- Aerobic exercise
- Tai Chi and gentle exercise
- Healthy Food Preparation & lunch
- Information on Healthy Diet and Nutrition
- Healthy Weight Loss
The program can also be delivered in a 2 day women’s camp setting.
EvaluationEvaluation is the key to securing ongoing funding beyond June 2009. University of Western Sydney will undertake an independent evaluation with an interim report due Jan 2009 to support fundraising efforts in Jan-June 2009.
Healing in Northern Rivers YWCA NSW’s is working with Aboriginal Women to develop and deliver an Aboriginal Women’s Healing and wellbeing program to build healthy lifestyle knowledge, practice and capacity within our local Aboriginal Community.
The program will be delivered 3 hours per week over 10 weeks. The Aboriginal Healing program will be used as the model of service delivery that will include the following activities:
- Healthy Food Preparation
- Information on Healthy Diet and Nutrition
- Healthy Weight Loss
- Indigenous Therapies including bushtucker and art
- Accessing Mainstream Health Services
- Exercise
