History
YWCA in NSW is now 130 years old, having been established in Sydney in 1880. This makes it the second oldest not for profit in Australia.
YWCA began in Great Britain in 1855, established by Lady Kinnaird and Miss Emma Roberts to provide a safe haven for homeless women and girls.
The YWCA's values and commitment to the social, economic and political equality of women remain central to its work today and are reflected in the programs and services currently offered by 132 YWCA's globally.
In Australia, the YWCA was established as YWCA of Sydney in 1880 by Mary Jane Barker, the wife of the then Sydney Bishop Frederick Barker.
