Homelessness is not just the lack of housing or the absence of a home, it can also result from being ‘cut off’ from family, relatives and friends. A person may be disconnected from society or marginalised as a result of mental health issues, poverty or because they don’t conform to family traditions/standards.
Imagine not having the security of your own little space and having to ask for help to meet your basic everyday needs because you have no money and no-one to turn to!
Funded by the City of Sydney, the Brokerage Program provides essential crisis support and case management to people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless including individuals, couples and families.
Crisis needs which are addressed may include accommodation, food, medical needs, travel assistance, material aid, counselling and financial assistance. The program operates during extended hours every day of the year including evenings, weekends and public holidays and is provided under contract to the City of Sydney.
The outcomes achieved by our Brokerage Program have been very positive, as assessed by reports from clients and other agencies working with these clients. We are often contacted by clients who have left our service, who report on the benefits gained through our work with them – including reconciliation with family and friends, access to long term affordable accommodation, linkages to appropriate support systems.
YWCA NSW also provides supported accommodation for young women aged between 17-25 (often with children or working on the restoration of their children) who find themselves homeless for a variety of reasons including escaping domestic violence.
