YWCA NSW In School Mentoring Program

In School Mentoring ProgramIn addition to our Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentoring Program YWCA NSW has developed this unique in-school mentoring program.

YWCA's In School Mentoring Program - provides mentoring by adult volunteers to small or full class groups of year 5 and 6 students in a supervised setting over the course of the school year.

As this special friendship develops, students receive particular support in the areas of literacy and numeracy skills, self esteem, social integration, and school attendance, helping to improve their overall school performance and connectedness to their community.

In School Mentoring 2008

We are currently providing teams of Mentors to 5 schools :

  • 3 schools in South West Region of Sydney using small group model.
  • 2 inner City Schools with the full class model being used.

Become An In School Mentor in 2010

We need mentors for our current and new schools joining the program next year.

Mentors will be matched with a student, meet weekly with a YWCA Coordinator and a school representative present. Mentoring sessions focus on project-orientated curriculum, including:

Leadership skills
Health and wellbeing
Communication
Building resilience

Not only are we transforming the lives of vulnerable children, but mentors also frequently report improvements in the quality of their lives, through interaction with the young people they are mentoring.
There is also a wonderful sense of teamwork and community as we partner with other mentors and school staff.

What commitment is needed?

Volunteers will need to attend group mentoring session for 1.5 hours at the same time every week during the school term. On average this is 7 sessions per term, for three terms with 4 - 5 weeks break in between each term.

Full training and support is provided by our professional team. Sessions will be supervised by the In School Mentoring Coordinator and a school representative.

There is also the opportunity to continue with the program for the following school year.

What skills do I need?

We welcome mentors from a variety of backgrounds - from universities and TAFEs as well as large corporates and small businesses. You do not need to have a lot of experience with young people but it desired that mentors:

Have an interest and ability to relate to a young person
Be willing to accept guidance from program staff
Appreciate others with different values

Follow facilitated curriculum to reach objectives of improved literacy, numeracy, social skills and school attendance. This includes sessions on leadership skills, health and wellbeing, communication and building resilience.

What is required of me?

To ensure the program is successful and that mentors are well prepared, all volunteers need to partake in our screening process, which includes:

Initial interview

Police Check
