"In Margaret Dunn, the YWCA has found the perfect writer for its history. From a treasure trove of diverse facts Margaret has revealed the golden thread of service that holds the YWCA together."
Florence Christian, National General Secretary, 1954-69.
Margaret Dunn’s involvement with the YWCA began in 1953 in New York. In search of work that allowed her to keep an eye on her two daughters, Margaret stumbled across the National Board of the YWCA of the USA, conveniently located a few doors from home, on the corner of East 52nd and Lexington. There, in the administration department, began a long and fond relationship with the "Y".
When the family moved to New Delhi, Margaret joined the National Board of the YWCA of India. In 1968, after her husband’s death, she became Publications Secretary for the World YWCA in Geneva and, 11 years later, was serving as a Board member and (twice) President of the YWCA of Sydney. During those years she wrote "The Dauntless Bunch - the story of YWCA in Australia" which is an integral part of our history.
On 27th August 2011, aged 91 Margaret Dunn passed away in Sydney. She is remembered as an accomplished journalist in radio, press and television; a great story teller, a fine woman and generous contributor to YWCAs across the globe.
