Links to Learning Retail & Hospitality Program - Western Sydney

The Links to Learning Retail & Hospitality Program in Parramatta is a free course for young people 15-24 years who left school before completing Year 12 or its equivalent and who wish to return to education and/or training.

These are young people with multiple barriers and significant difficulties accessing and participating in formal learning environments. They are referred into the course via community support agencies working with youth, including Centrelink, or through self referral.

Each year 64 young people are offered this training which provides an accredited Retail or Hospitality qualification over a 10 week period. There are no formal exams and the training is delivered in innovative and interesting ways and offers many action learning activities.

Students also attend a 1 week work placement during the program which assists them to understand how to apply their learning in the workplace and develops their employability skills. The course also enhances participant’s employment opportunities and career options and provides pathways to further education and training.

Participants are actively supported into a ‘next step' vocational/education choice following completion of their training.

  Links to Learning - Sydney

Links to Learning is an achievement-based program
mapped to employability skills that provides support for
Year 9 students who are experiencing some difficulty
with formal schooling. Students may be at risk of leaving
school early and/or may be having difficulties determining
their future. The aim of the program is to re-engage these students in further learning through their participation in diverse and alternative learning environments.

The program assists students to make informed educational and career decisions and understand the importance of education. It also works with students to address some of the personal issues in their lives at this point in time. Carefully structured activities including workshops, discussions, tutoring, excursions and TAFE courses in the areas of careers, study skills, life skills and project based learning enables these young women to prepare for future education and work.

YWCA NSW Sydney Links to Learning Program works in partnership with South Sydney and Randwick Girls High Schools.

Funded by the Minister for Education and Training and administered by the Department of Education and Training.
